Cartography of Becoming -- Lake Studios Berlin - August 2019, IceBox Project Space, Philly Fringe Festival 2022
Choreographer: Kat Brown - Performers: Kat Brown and Cecile Janvier, Emily-Rose Cannon
This work takes map-making as a point of departure. A map documents materiality, while becoming exists in an ephemeral space that is continually unfolding in time. The work sits inside this tension, asking: How do you map that which is ever changing? The duet seeks to reveal both the steadiness and fragility inherent in the process of becoming.
Practically, the piece begins with a pile of stones placed on my back as I move. Each movement produces sound, and as the stones accumulate they fall in unpredictable ways, leaving a pattern on the floor. The stones function as both weight and record—marking time through accumulation and loss. The movement is simple and fragile, allowing attention to settle on the relationship between burden, balance, and change.
The work reflects my interest in the body as a living archive, carrying traces of experience that are continually rearranged through time.
